KAIROS Dance Theater presents MINISTRY of FEMME

  • The Dance Complex 536 Massachusetts Ave Cambridge, MA (map)

As part of The Dance Complex's I-ARE Residency Program, KAIROS Dance Theater / DeAnna Pellecchia will present a very special 'teaser' performance of "MINISTRY of ♀" (leading up to the Fall 2019 premiere) that takes audience members behind-the-scenes of the company's creative process.

"Prelude to MINISTRY of ♀" gives viewers a sneak peek into KAIROS' newest evening-length performance, featuring recently integrated design elements: film by Lindsay Lapointe, visual art installation by Corinne Chase and costume prototypes by Carlos Villamil.

The evening will culminate in a post-performance conversation with KAIROS dancers and collaborators about crafting multi-disciplinary performances and utilizing art as a tool for social change.

ABOUT MINISTRY of ♀
MINISTRY of ♀, an evening-length multi-media dance theater performance, explores the feminine experience, the question of gender, and the resilience present in communities of survivors, femmes, and womxn.

The age-old stories passed down to us in lore and song, plastered on billboards and in magazines, consumed in movies and television, bind femininity to specific roles. They describe exactly how to look and how to act. They prescribe, how to exist in our own bodies and minds. Through the examination of media driven archetypes and clichés, MINISTRY of ♀ exposes the world of unattainable standards created by gender stereotypes.

The choreography combines contemporary, pole dance, jazz, and video dance, and draws inspiration from iconic images generated by Hollywood and the fashion industry; poetry by Eve Ensler, Maya Angelou, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; and personal stories from female-identifying community members. The dancers perform in and out of 7-inch platform stilettos and smile-masks, vacillating, sometimes violently, between myth and truth. FASHION DESIGNER CARLOS VILLAMIL, FILMMAKER LINDSAY LAPOINTE, LIGHTING DESIGNER JAYNE MURPHY, and VISUAL ARTIST CORINNE CHASE add dimensions of texture and imagery that directly inform the choreography and intensify the physical story-telling.

Featuring music by PJ Harvey, Ani DiFranco, Beastie Boys, Robert Palmer, DJ Fraction, Rachel’s and Fiona Apple, MINISTRY of ♀ aims to shine a light on the damaging effects of stereotypes and feminine objectification, and offer a fuller understanding of the complexities of the feminine identity. It also strives to provide a platform for a further conversation about the stereotypes we all experience.

**The Dance Complex's Integrated Artists’ Residency Exchange (I-ARE) is a program intended to bring an artist’s next steps to intersection with what is next for The Dance Complex, and what is next in the field of dance locally, regionally and nationally. This season's I-ARE Residency Artists, DeAnna Pellecchia and Karen Krolak, have taken their next steps by exploring their work in new ways -- changing patterns, taking risks -- and sharing these learning moments with the community.
